Oregon denies equal rights
Yesterday, the Oregon Supreme Court has confirmed that homosexuals do not deserve the same benefits and recognition from the government as heterosexuals.
And the Governor has, in my opinion, folded -- introducing a bill this week to require civil unions under the State Constitution.
"The state's position from the outset was that the fundamental issue was whether or not same-sex couples were entitled to the rights and privileges of marriage, not just the institution of marriage itself," said Kevin Neely, a spokesman for State Attorney General Hardy Myers.
Is it only me who for whom this screams "seperate but equal"?
As soon as we start calling them different things, we can start granting special privileges to one but not the other.
I don't care what we call them, but the government's got to call them the same thing. If so many object to the word "marriage," then let's call them all "civil unions" and let the churches grant the marriages.
That's a compromise I could live with.
